TAFC Winter Roster

The TAFC is happy to announce it’s roster for the GPSD 3rd Division Winter season.

Forwards:

  • David Perez
  • Chris Sabroe

Midfielders

  • Tom Harrison
  • Jason Elstad
  • Stephen Chen
  • Jesse Wagner
  • Pat Cosgrove
  • Jerry Makare

Defenders

  • Kip Kesgard
  • Jamey Billig
  • Roy Payne
  • Abe Goldman-Armstrong
  • Eric Berg
  • Steve Keunzi

Goalkeeper

  • Anthony Perez

An unfortunate turn of events saw key midfield player Chris Tschirley injured during the recent Timbers Army United indoor season, which puts him on the injured reserves until the Fall Season. James Gordon was also planning on playing for the TAFC this season, but a nagging injury to his foot has put him on the injured list per doctors orders. We look forward to having them back for Fall.

Former striker and founding manager of the TAFC Nando Machicado has left the club to play on rival North End United. Good luck Nando, except for when you play us in the fall…..

Also on the transfer front Gary Foubister’s loan spell from FC77 Rangers has ended and he will be playing for them once again. He is always welcome to join us for practice, and we will probably be calling him to beg for a loan should we need a player to fill our right wing.

All in all the team is fairly stripped down for the GPSD Winter season, but with only five games we are going to do our best to be a competitive team.

See you on the pitch!

GPSD Winter Fixtures Announced

One of the things about playing in GPSD’s winter season is that there are less teams to compete with. This winter a little shake up took place amongst the division tables, so now instead of 4 divisions there are 3. The Timbers Army Football Club was placed in Division 3 with longtime rivals Mayday while North End United was moved to Division 2 to play against FC Portlandia. The other thing about playing in winter is that all the games are on turf to minimize damage to grass fields. Fortunately for the TAFC all of our matches are at Gladstone High School, which is much better then the turf at the infamous Mary Rieke Elementary School, which is where NEU and FC Portlandia will be playing their matches…our condolences to your knees, ankles, feet, joints, and tendons guys.

The winter fixture schedule for TAFC is:

2/07/2010 – 12:20pm – Mayday v. TAFC – Gladstone High School

2/14/2010 – 11:10am – TAFC  v. Joe Public – Gladstone High School

2/21/2010 – 11:10am – FC77 PBR v. TAFC  – Gladstone High School

2/28/2010 – 10:00am – TAFC  v. FC Bridgetown United – Gladstone High School

3/07/2010 – 12:20pm – Eastside Gunners v. TAFC – Gladstone High School

The TAFC is looking forward to seeing some action again soon. Keep your eyes open for our winter roster announcement and more news from the TAFC!

Waiting, Waiting, Waiting….

TAFC is registered for the Winter GPSD Season yto begin in February. Unfortunately our rivals NEU mistakenly signed up for Division 2 instead of Division 4, so we’ll have to wait another season before we meet them again. Good luck to them in D2, they are going to need it.

As we get closer to the season starting up keep your eyes on this site for the roster, and schedule as well as Match reports and stats.

See you soon!

Final Stats for Fall 2009 Season

The final stats for the Fall 2009 season are in. Before we get to the stats the TAFC would like to thank Ninkasi Brewing for their sponsorship, and to Bruce Eaton for putting our kits together for us.

Thanks TAFC for your hard work on the pitch. Though the results never favored us it was a competitive season, and a ton of fun….well 90% of the time anyways…the Onetouchables game was brutal.

    10/25/2009 TAFC v. The Onetouchables

TAFC Slips and Slides to a Loss Against South VN

The TAFC saw action against South VN today, and were unfortunately unable to close the gap on them.

The first half happened primarily in the TAFC defensive third as South VN used there speed to get around the TAFC midfield and Defense. The TAFC defense had to absorb attack after attack as South VN was picking up too many loose balls. The first goal happened after Jason Elstad was challenged and fell over, though it could have been called a foul the referee called play on and South VN made a run into the box and slottted the ball home. The next South VN goals happened quick, as the TAFC struggled to regain their composure. The second goal coming in as the defense left a South VN player unmarked. The third happened when TAFC keeper Roy Payne caught the ball to high on a goalkick and sent the ball out to an unmarked South VN player.

The second half saw a much more agressive TAFC. Several runs were made down the wings, and the run of play was starting to switch. The TAFC scored their first goal of the match as Josh Thompson sent in a corner kick and found Tom Harrison who slammed the ball with a left footed volley into the net. Moments later David Levine saw an open net and decided to take a shot from 3o yards out, the South VN keeper wasn’t able to stretch out enough to get hold of the ball. South VN jealous of David’s goal set up at the restart and tried a shot from the half, needless to say…it didn’t work. Unfortuantely for the TAFC South VN was able to regroup and push forward, and scored a goal not long after David’s goal. An attacking South VN player put the ball under John Gaffney’s leg and the shot caught Nando going the wrong way. The final South VN goal came after Nando got caught 1 on 1 and the South VN player finished under pressure slotting the ball into the corner of the goal.

When the final whistle blew it was 5-2 South VN

The North End Derby: GPSD’s Rival Timbers Army Teams Clash!

The North End Derby between Portland Timbers supporter’s teams North End United and the TAFC took place on Sunday, September 27th 2009. The battle for bragging rights was a hotly contested affair, and incredibly entertaining to participate in.

toohighThe first half had NEU and TAFC pushing forward and trying to open the game up. As both teams made run after run to no avail tension began to mount. The TAFC back line  was absorbing pressure very well, and new signing Anthony Perez in goal was called upon to make several stops early in the game.

It was during the first half that the game was established as a physical affair as the referee began letting hard challenges go uncalled for both teams. The referee also made several dubious calls regarding hand balls. As the referee made it clear that the game was going to be allowed to get physical both teams began playing in a very chippy manner. Near the midpoint of the half North End United manager/midfielder Jerry Langan got into an altercation with TAFC striker David Perez, after an NEU player kicked David in the face while challenging for a ball, and David responded by throwing the NEU player down. Jerry was calmed down and play continued.

The best chance for TAFC came near the end of the half when Pat Cosgrove sent a ball through the middle releasing David Perez on a run into the box. The NEU keeper came off his line and challenged for the ball, David was unable to poke the ball through as the NEU keeper held on to keep the score level.

Though both teams had several opportunities to score the halftime whistle was blown to a 0 – 0 score line.

The second half started quickly as NEU exploited a gap in the TAFC midfield and back line. Simon O’Gorman made a run into the box and passed the ball off to Marcus Nelson who dumped it into the back of the net.

At the restart the TAFC needed to regain some confidence as NEU stepped up to push on the tiring back line. Several shots from NEU were pushed wide as the TAFC began asserting themselves again. At roughly the 55′ minute mark Simon O’Gormon was booked for a hard challenge as the TAFC made a push forward. The TAFC continued to push forward, and it was only moments after Simon’s booking that he received his second yellow, and was shown the red card as out coldDonald Bramlet was knocked unconscious by the ball during a scrum in front of the NEU goal. Simon’s ejection was due to yelling at Donald while Donald was on the ground. In the confusion of the moment the referee pulled out another red card and booked NEU defender Brendan O’Hanlon for what the ref thought was threatening behaviour, which was actually a mistake on the part of the referee. The red card was redacted, and Brendan was allowed to continue to play.

As the mid-point of the half approached NEU Left Wing Joel Weakland made a run and had the ball taken from him by a tackling Chris Sabroe. The referee blew for a foul as Joel Went to ground outside the area. Joel Weakland set up the shot and sent the ball over the TAFC wall and into the far post net sending the score to 2 – 0.

The TAFC began to try and find a way back into the match. Josh Thompson very nearly brought the TAFC within striking distance as a ball from David Perez found his head, and just kissed the top bar and went out for a goal kick. Gary Foubister was in the NEU box with the ball and was able to send a clever back heel to Chris Tschirley who sent the ball into the net catching the NEU keeper flat-footed. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and the North End Derby ended with a score of 2-1 North End United with the win.

The North End Derby was a physical and highly contested match. The TAFC and NEU face off once again on November 1st, 2009. both teams hope that a referee will be found that can keep both sides level headed, and therefore making for a more enjoyable game.

Frustration as TAFC Stumbles Against Onetouchables

The TAFC was frustrated in their attempts at winning against longtime rival Onetouchables.

tafcvonetouchThe TAFC opened the scoring in the match as a quick cross in from Gary Foubister, met with an attacking David Perez, who netted his third goal in two games for the TAFC. Unfortunately not long after the restart the Onetouchables equalized as they found room on the wing to send in a shot, which was slowed by keeper Roy Payne who was unable to keep the shot from scooting free into the path of another Onetouchable who cleaned up the spill.

Moments later the Onetouchables scored their next goal as a loose ball in the box was being challenged for, attacking Onetouchable pulled down TAFC defender Jerry Makare, and in the process of going for the ball kicked him (not too hard) in the head, and then tapped the ball in for a dubious goal.

Not long after that the TAFC was making a run down the right side of the pitch Gary Foubister sent another cross in over the Onetouchables, David Perez put his head on it and sent it towards the far post where Josh Thompson scored the equalizer on his TAFC Debut. THe run of play turned in favor of the TAFC as the midfield began finding a rythm. The TAFC Defense led by John Gaffney, and Jamey Billig tightened down enough to keep the Onetouchables at bay as opportunity after opportunity for TAFC strikers seemed to fall through. At roughly the 30′ minute mark the Onetouchables scored again as one of their strikes came in past a valient attempt at a stop by Roy Payne.

The second half saw much confusion on the part of the TAFC as a quick change of formation from a 3-2-4-1 to a 4-3-3 left to large a gap between the defense and the midfield, which the Onetouchables exploited. The TAFC held the Onetouchables at arms length as run after run into the TAFC box seemed to take place. The TAFC did find space to counter attack, but seemed to be unable to get the ball near enough the mouth of the goal to cause the Onetouchable defense much trouble, though their lack of subs was clearly becoming an issue for them. Several shots by David Perez, Nando, Jason Elstad, and Josh Thompson went just wide of the goal, and gave the TAFC on the sidelines heart attacks. Unfortunately the Onetouchables found room to manuever and one of their strikers pulled the trigger on a shot from well outside the area, Roy Payne wasn’t able to stretch out big enough to get his hands on the shot, and the Onetouchables went up 4-2

Not long after the strike from outside the area the Onetouchables caught a quick break and found themselves one on one with Roy Payne, and were able to slot the ball into the corner of the net. The TAFC attempted to rally after this and pushed forward looking to close the gap, but on a Onetouchable corner kick the ball was headed high, and somehow just floated into the net. This was a pretty unbeliveable goal, as all on the side though it had cleared the top bar, until the ball touched the back of the net.

Near the end of the match David Levine made a run down the right wing, and was able to manuever himself into striking range and put the ball home. Which brought the game to it’s final score of TAFC 3 – 6 Onetouchables.
