Mayday v. TAFC

The TAFC started off their spring division 4 campaign with a 3-1 loss to old rivals Mayday, but despite the result there were several moments of positive play that gives some hope to a competetive season. WIth the new influx of players coming in and with the lack of practices that the TAFC had before the season it was expected that Mayday would be able to muscle their way through to the win.

Some notable moments were Tim Pepper’s stop of a 1 on 1 attempt that would have put Mayday on the board much earlier, and a fantastic team goal spearheaded by Luis Martin Del Campo, who worked with David Perez and Jesse Wagner to get through the Mayday defense which set up a calm and composed finish by Jesse to get the TAFC consolation goal.

Coming up this Saturday is the first fixture against newly formed Timbers Army team Rose City Athletic. This will also mark the restart of the North End Cup competition http://northendcup.wordpress.com/ that pits all four current Timbers supporters teams against one another.

RCA is coming off a 2-1 loss to the TAFC traditional rival North End United, and they are looking to pick up some points.

FINAL RESULT

MAYDAY 3 – 1 TAFC

Stats

Jesse Wagner – 1 Goal

Luis Martin del Campo – 1 Assist

Fall Season Stats – In the Books

The Timbers Army Football Club finished off the GPSD Div. 4 Fall. It was a tough season, but a season that saw 2 wins and 1 draw (though sadly one of those wins was nullified by the referee not showing up to officiate). Due to the general craziness of my schedule I was never able to write a post match report for this season. I did log all of the goals, and kept track of the assists and cards. Here are the end of season stats.

  • Goals
  1. David Perez – 5
  2. Jesse Wagner – 4
  3. Andrew Mills – 3
  4. Chris Tschirley – 2
  5. Luis Del Marten Campo – 1
  6. Jerry Makare – 1
  7. Juan Serrano – 1
  • Assists:
  1. Dave Perez – 2
  2. Jesse Wagner – 2
  3. Joe Held – 2
  4. Juan Serrano – 2
  5. Andrew Mills – 1
  • Cards
  • Abe Goldman-Armstrong
  • Luis Del Marten Campo

Goals For: 17

Goals Against: 47

We’ll be rolling on into the GPSD Winter League, so keep checking back for more news on the TAFC.

Two Official Games and One Unofficial Game Into the Fall Season

I can’t believe it is already 3 weeks into the GPSD Fall Season. Here is a quick update as to where the TAFC stands at the moment.

Game 1: Mingo United v. TAFC

This game proved to be pretty brutal. With almost half the team out of action due to work and travel the remaining lads had to play with only 1 sub in the first half, and 2 subs in the second.

Final Score

Mingo United 7 – 1  TAFC

Stats

Tim Pepper – 1 Goal

Andrew Mills – 1 Assist

Game 2: TAFC v. Multnomah County Corrections FC

This game highlighted the TAFC’s need for fitness. Though more organized and utilizing subs better then in previous matches, the TAFC was getting beaten on runs and in the midfield. The TAFC did have several chances to score, but a stout keeper for the Multnomah County screws was enough to keep the TAFC tied to 1 goal.

Final Score: TAFC 1 – 7 Multnomah County Corrections FC

Jesse Wagner – 1 Goal

THE UNOFFICIAL WIN: Onetouchables v. TAFC

The TAFC took on The Onetouchables in what was supposed to be the third match of the GPSD Fall Season, but unfortunately the referee did not show up to the grounds for the match. Both teams agreed to a scrimmage and play started about 15 minutes late. The Onetouchables have long been a thorn in the TAFC side, often times winning with less guys on the pitch, and playing a physical brand of footy.

It looked to be that sort of game early on as the Onetouchables put a ball past Tim Pepper in the TAFC goal. Just moments later though the TAFC proved that they had come to play when a beautiful cross from Davide Perez found the head of Tom Harrison who rocketed a shot into the net, a truly wonderful goal. The Onetouchables played back at the TAFC, and though it was a scrimmage it was fairly apperant that both teams had come to play. When the half time whistle/yell rang out it was Onetouchables on top 3-1.

The second half started, and the TAFC played footy like I haven’t seen the TAFC play in…well, ever. Good short passing and communication with darting runs that opened up the Onetouchables tiring defense efficiently along with good physical defense and aggressive play in the midfield saw the TAFC score not once, or twice, but 3 times in the second half. Amazing keeping from Tim in the net helped solidify the lead, and when the final whistle/yell was heard the TAFC had recorderd not just a win, but a come from behind rout of the opposition. Truly a great little game.

Two great moments of mention was the Tom Harrison’s header as well as a great chipped ball by Kip over the midfield and right to a charging Jesse Wagner who slotted a the ball into the top right corner of the net with an amazingly well placed shot.

Unfortunately since the ref didn’t show up, none of these stats will be counted in the final season tabulations, but it was a great game and hopefully a confidence booster for a team in need of a win.

Final Score: Onetouchables 3 – 4 TAFC (UNOFFICIAL)

Tom Harrison – 1 Goal

David Perez – 1 Goal 1 Assist

Luis Martin De Campo – 1 Goal

Jesse Wagner – 1 Goal

Kip Kesgard – 1 Assist

  2. Multnomah County Corrections v. TAFC – 09/19/2010 – 12:00PM – Delta Park #7
  3. TAFC v. The Onetouchables – 09/26/2010 – 12:00PM – Columbia Park
  4. Mayday v. TAFC – 10/03/2010 – 12:00PM – Columbia Park
  5. Net Rippers Azuri v. TAFC – 10/10/2010 – 2:00PM – Clinton Park (Lower)
  6. TAFC v. Broken Arrow – 10/17/210 – 12:00PM – Clinton Park Lower
  7. TAFC v. Deacon Blue – 10/24/2010 – 12:00PM – Delta Park #7
  8. TAFC v . Mingo United – 10/31/2010 – 12:00PM – Gladstone Highschool
  9. TAFC v. Multnomah County Corrections – 11/07/2010 – 12:00PM – Columbia Park
  10. Onetouchables v. TAFC – 11/14/2010 – 2:00PM – Columbia Park
Only one new team joins the league and that is the Multnomah County Corrections FC team. There are some old scores to be settled between TAFC and Mayday, though for the most part that has been a friendly rivalry. It should be interesting to see the match between Mingo United and TAFC as the last time the two sides played there was some aggressive behavior, and general chippiness involved with the play. It was definitely not a friendly game, and whether the contentious nature of the match carries over or if it has mellowed over the off season will be entertaining.
Check back soon as new details on the Hopworks Urban Brewing sponsored kit is released, and look for match reports to happen once the season officially kicks off!
Also congratulations go out to goalkeeper Anthony Perez as he welcomes his twin daughters Mya and Addisyn to the world! In just a few short years hopefully they will be tearing up the US Womens National Team and making Tony and Marta proud! All the best to the family!

HOPWORKS URBAN BREWERY SPONSOR 2010/2011 TAFC!

The Timbers Army Football Club is happy to announce that Hopworks Urban Brewery will be the team kit sponsor for the 2010/2011 seasons!

The local brewpub was most recently awarded the best brew pub overall  in Portland by Portland Monthly magazine, and the TAFC is looking forward to spending time with a few pitchers and eating some damn fine food after a hard day on the pitch!

Look for our new kits to be unveiled soon, and if you haven’t tried any of the beers from Hopworks then I urge you to drop what you are doing and head on out to your nearest bottle shop and grab a beer! In fact as soon as I get home from work I intend to crack a bottle of  Secession Black IPA (Cascadian Dark Ale).

TAFC Spring Season Stats

The spring campaign of the TAFC was not as successful as hoped. 6 of the games saw some sort of scheduling conflict due to poor planning by the league, or by weather. 1 Game was canceled entirely based on the inability to get a game rescheduled after heavy rains and too much play ruined the pitch of Montessori Earth School.

Despite the setbacks, the level of play continues to improve, and the TAFC is looking ahead at the next season. Instead of doing a recap of the last few games of the season I have decided to publish the final statistics from spring and focus my energy on fall.

Goals Scored

  1. David Perez – 4
  2. Jesse Wagner – 3
  3. David Levine – 2
  4. Sean McGuigan – 2
  5. John Gaffney – 1
  6. Tom Harrison – 1

Assists

  1. Jesse Wagner – 2
  2. David Levine – 1
  3. Sean McGuigan – 1
  4. Tom Harrison – 1

Cards

  1. Abe Goldman Armstrong – 1 (Yellow)
  2. David Perez – 1 (Yellow)

Training for Fall begins on 7/14/2010 and there will be a roster and sponsor announcement coming soon.

Also the TAFC would like to pass on our congratulations to our friendly Timbers Army rivals North End United as they will be moving up to the GPSD 3rd Division for the fall. Great job lads, look forward to getting an opportunity to play you all again.

Games 3 and 4 In the Books for GPSD Spring

I really intend to spend more time writing match reports after the TAFC plays…I just never quite get there though. One day I’ll get on top of my game and get this sorted proper.

TAFC has two matches since the last report was written. Here are the basic stats.

Game 3: TAFC v. Onetouchables

The Onetouchables have long been a pain in our ass. Once upon a time they beat us 9-0 (actually that was only 2 seasons ago). TAFC needed to shake this particular monkey off our back, and I’d say we did a pretty good job of working towards just that.

The TAFC held the Onetouchables for most of the first half, but then disaster struck as a blatantly offside attacker for Onetouchable was able to slot the ball past Anthony Perez. As soon as this happened the TAFC fell apart allowing two more goals in quick succession. The whistle blew for the half giving the Onetouchables a 3-0 advantage. the TAFC had been making scoring opportunities happen but, hadn’t yet been able to find the back of the net.

The second half was a different story. The TAFC played a very aggressive style of play, and soon owned the midfield. It was 10 minutes into the half that saw David Perez on the ball, with plenty of time to get a good look at the goal, place a well struck ball into the back of the net. Shortly after that Mbaki (TAFC’s new international) was leveled in the midfield and had to be escorted off the pitch. This happened the same time that David Perez, and play maker Luie De Campo Martin had to leave the match as well, it seemed the death knell for the midfield had been rung, but this was not to be the case. At the halfway point to the second half Sean McGuigan took a corner kick that curled off of the Onetouchable keeper and into the net.

The TAFC made a push for the equalizer, but was unable to score anymore goals. One notable achievement was that this was the first time in at least 5 seasons that the TAFC had held a team to no goals in any half. Abe Goldman-Armstrong gets the nod for man of the match as he played an outstanding game that kept Onetouchables from scoring on multiple occasions.

Final Score

TAFC 2 – 3 Onetouchables

Stats

David Perez – 1 Goal – 1 Card (Yellow)

Sean McGuigan – 1 Goal

Game 4: Deacon Blue v. TAFC

This game did have a couple bright moments. Mostly that the TAFC came back from a 2 goal deficit to tie it up by halftime. Unfortunately tires legs had set in and the TAFC fell apart at the end of the match.

Final Score

Deacon Blue 6 – 3 – TAFC

Stats

David Perez – 1 Goal

James gaffney – 1 Goal

Jesse Wagner  – 1 Goal

I will try to get a more detailed and better written match report out for the next game against Mingo United. Of course the game we are all excited for is on the 24th DERBY DAY!
