Mayday v. TAFC

The TAFC started off their spring division 4 campaign with a 3-1 loss to old rivals Mayday, but despite the result there were several moments of positive play that gives some hope to a competetive season. WIth the new influx of players coming in and with the lack of practices that the TAFC had before the season it was expected that Mayday would be able to muscle their way through to the win.

Some notable moments were Tim Pepper’s stop of a 1 on 1 attempt that would have put Mayday on the board much earlier, and a fantastic team goal spearheaded by Luis Martin Del Campo, who worked with David Perez and Jesse Wagner to get through the Mayday defense which set up a calm and composed finish by Jesse to get the TAFC consolation goal.

Coming up this Saturday is the first fixture against newly formed Timbers Army team Rose City Athletic. This will also mark the restart of the North End Cup competition http://northendcup.wordpress.com/ that pits all four current Timbers supporters teams against one another.

RCA is coming off a 2-1 loss to the TAFC traditional rival North End United, and they are looking to pick up some points.

FINAL RESULT

MAYDAY 3 – 1 TAFC

Stats

Jesse Wagner – 1 Goal

Luis Martin del Campo – 1 Assist

Two Official Games and One Unofficial Game Into the Fall Season

I can’t believe it is already 3 weeks into the GPSD Fall Season. Here is a quick update as to where the TAFC stands at the moment.

Game 1: Mingo United v. TAFC

This game proved to be pretty brutal. With almost half the team out of action due to work and travel the remaining lads had to play with only 1 sub in the first half, and 2 subs in the second.

Final Score

Mingo United 7 – 1  TAFC

Stats

Tim Pepper – 1 Goal

Andrew Mills – 1 Assist

Game 2: TAFC v. Multnomah County Corrections FC

This game highlighted the TAFC’s need for fitness. Though more organized and utilizing subs better then in previous matches, the TAFC was getting beaten on runs and in the midfield. The TAFC did have several chances to score, but a stout keeper for the Multnomah County screws was enough to keep the TAFC tied to 1 goal.

Final Score: TAFC 1 – 7 Multnomah County Corrections FC

Jesse Wagner – 1 Goal

THE UNOFFICIAL WIN: Onetouchables v. TAFC

The TAFC took on The Onetouchables in what was supposed to be the third match of the GPSD Fall Season, but unfortunately the referee did not show up to the grounds for the match. Both teams agreed to a scrimmage and play started about 15 minutes late. The Onetouchables have long been a thorn in the TAFC side, often times winning with less guys on the pitch, and playing a physical brand of footy.

It looked to be that sort of game early on as the Onetouchables put a ball past Tim Pepper in the TAFC goal. Just moments later though the TAFC proved that they had come to play when a beautiful cross from Davide Perez found the head of Tom Harrison who rocketed a shot into the net, a truly wonderful goal. The Onetouchables played back at the TAFC, and though it was a scrimmage it was fairly apperant that both teams had come to play. When the half time whistle/yell rang out it was Onetouchables on top 3-1.

The second half started, and the TAFC played footy like I haven’t seen the TAFC play in…well, ever. Good short passing and communication with darting runs that opened up the Onetouchables tiring defense efficiently along with good physical defense and aggressive play in the midfield saw the TAFC score not once, or twice, but 3 times in the second half. Amazing keeping from Tim in the net helped solidify the lead, and when the final whistle/yell was heard the TAFC had recorderd not just a win, but a come from behind rout of the opposition. Truly a great little game.

Two great moments of mention was the Tom Harrison’s header as well as a great chipped ball by Kip over the midfield and right to a charging Jesse Wagner who slotted a the ball into the top right corner of the net with an amazingly well placed shot.

Unfortunately since the ref didn’t show up, none of these stats will be counted in the final season tabulations, but it was a great game and hopefully a confidence booster for a team in need of a win.

Final Score: Onetouchables 3 – 4 TAFC (UNOFFICIAL)

Tom Harrison – 1 Goal

David Perez – 1 Goal 1 Assist

Luis Martin De Campo – 1 Goal

Jesse Wagner – 1 Goal

Kip Kesgard – 1 Assist

HOPWORKS URBAN BREWERY SPONSOR 2010/2011 TAFC!

The Timbers Army Football Club is happy to announce that Hopworks Urban Brewery will be the team kit sponsor for the 2010/2011 seasons!

The local brewpub was most recently awarded the best brew pub overall  in Portland by Portland Monthly magazine, and the TAFC is looking forward to spending time with a few pitchers and eating some damn fine food after a hard day on the pitch!

Look for our new kits to be unveiled soon, and if you haven’t tried any of the beers from Hopworks then I urge you to drop what you are doing and head on out to your nearest bottle shop and grab a beer! In fact as soon as I get home from work I intend to crack a bottle of  Secession Black IPA (Cascadian Dark Ale).

Games 3 and 4 In the Books for GPSD Spring

I really intend to spend more time writing match reports after the TAFC plays…I just never quite get there though. One day I’ll get on top of my game and get this sorted proper.

TAFC has two matches since the last report was written. Here are the basic stats.

Game 3: TAFC v. Onetouchables

The Onetouchables have long been a pain in our ass. Once upon a time they beat us 9-0 (actually that was only 2 seasons ago). TAFC needed to shake this particular monkey off our back, and I’d say we did a pretty good job of working towards just that.

The TAFC held the Onetouchables for most of the first half, but then disaster struck as a blatantly offside attacker for Onetouchable was able to slot the ball past Anthony Perez. As soon as this happened the TAFC fell apart allowing two more goals in quick succession. The whistle blew for the half giving the Onetouchables a 3-0 advantage. the TAFC had been making scoring opportunities happen but, hadn’t yet been able to find the back of the net.

The second half was a different story. The TAFC played a very aggressive style of play, and soon owned the midfield. It was 10 minutes into the half that saw David Perez on the ball, with plenty of time to get a good look at the goal, place a well struck ball into the back of the net. Shortly after that Mbaki (TAFC’s new international) was leveled in the midfield and had to be escorted off the pitch. This happened the same time that David Perez, and play maker Luie De Campo Martin had to leave the match as well, it seemed the death knell for the midfield had been rung, but this was not to be the case. At the halfway point to the second half Sean McGuigan took a corner kick that curled off of the Onetouchable keeper and into the net.

The TAFC made a push for the equalizer, but was unable to score anymore goals. One notable achievement was that this was the first time in at least 5 seasons that the TAFC had held a team to no goals in any half. Abe Goldman-Armstrong gets the nod for man of the match as he played an outstanding game that kept Onetouchables from scoring on multiple occasions.

Final Score

TAFC 2 – 3 Onetouchables

Stats

David Perez – 1 Goal – 1 Card (Yellow)

Sean McGuigan – 1 Goal

Game 4: Deacon Blue v. TAFC

This game did have a couple bright moments. Mostly that the TAFC came back from a 2 goal deficit to tie it up by halftime. Unfortunately tires legs had set in and the TAFC fell apart at the end of the match.

Final Score

Deacon Blue 6 – 3 – TAFC

Stats

David Perez – 1 Goal

James gaffney – 1 Goal

Jesse Wagner  – 1 Goal

I will try to get a more detailed and better written match report out for the next game against Mingo United. Of course the game we are all excited for is on the 24th DERBY DAY!

2 Games into the Spring Season

The TAFC has seen action in 2 matches in the GPSD 4th Division fall season. Both matches were tightly contested, and enjoyable affairs with many goals on both sides.

Game 1: Mayday v. TAFC

The first match saw the TAFC playing against their longtime 4th Division rival Mayday. Though in the end the TAFC lost 5 to 3 it must be said that playing against Mayday is generally an entertaining way to spend an April evening. The first match also saw the return of several of  the TAFC players from the Fall season. John Gaffney, David Levine, Sean McGuigan all had a run out for the team as did newcomers David Hunt, Petta De Vos, and Luis De Campo Martin. Goalkeeper Anthony Perez made a few incredible stops to keep the TAFC in the game. All in all good stuff.

Final Score

Mayday 5 – 3 – TAFC

Stats

David Perez – 2 Goals

David Levine  – 1 Goal

Jesse Wagner  – 1 Assist

Sean McGuigan – 1 Assist

Game 2: Netrippers Azul  v. TAFC

I was out of town for this match, but apperantly the lads did very well, and it was only the lack of strikers and subs at the match that kept the TAFC from recording a win.

Stats

David Levine – 1 Goal

Jesse Wagner – 1 Goal – 1 Assist

Tom Harrison – 1 Goal

The North End Derby: GPSD’s Rival Timbers Army Teams Clash!

The North End Derby between Portland Timbers supporter’s teams North End United and the TAFC took place on Sunday, September 27th 2009. The battle for bragging rights was a hotly contested affair, and incredibly entertaining to participate in.

toohighThe first half had NEU and TAFC pushing forward and trying to open the game up. As both teams made run after run to no avail tension began to mount. The TAFC back line  was absorbing pressure very well, and new signing Anthony Perez in goal was called upon to make several stops early in the game.

It was during the first half that the game was established as a physical affair as the referee began letting hard challenges go uncalled for both teams. The referee also made several dubious calls regarding hand balls. As the referee made it clear that the game was going to be allowed to get physical both teams began playing in a very chippy manner. Near the midpoint of the half North End United manager/midfielder Jerry Langan got into an altercation with TAFC striker David Perez, after an NEU player kicked David in the face while challenging for a ball, and David responded by throwing the NEU player down. Jerry was calmed down and play continued.

The best chance for TAFC came near the end of the half when Pat Cosgrove sent a ball through the middle releasing David Perez on a run into the box. The NEU keeper came off his line and challenged for the ball, David was unable to poke the ball through as the NEU keeper held on to keep the score level.

Though both teams had several opportunities to score the halftime whistle was blown to a 0 – 0 score line.

The second half started quickly as NEU exploited a gap in the TAFC midfield and back line. Simon O’Gorman made a run into the box and passed the ball off to Marcus Nelson who dumped it into the back of the net.

At the restart the TAFC needed to regain some confidence as NEU stepped up to push on the tiring back line. Several shots from NEU were pushed wide as the TAFC began asserting themselves again. At roughly the 55′ minute mark Simon O’Gormon was booked for a hard challenge as the TAFC made a push forward. The TAFC continued to push forward, and it was only moments after Simon’s booking that he received his second yellow, and was shown the red card as out coldDonald Bramlet was knocked unconscious by the ball during a scrum in front of the NEU goal. Simon’s ejection was due to yelling at Donald while Donald was on the ground. In the confusion of the moment the referee pulled out another red card and booked NEU defender Brendan O’Hanlon for what the ref thought was threatening behaviour, which was actually a mistake on the part of the referee. The red card was redacted, and Brendan was allowed to continue to play.

As the mid-point of the half approached NEU Left Wing Joel Weakland made a run and had the ball taken from him by a tackling Chris Sabroe. The referee blew for a foul as Joel Went to ground outside the area. Joel Weakland set up the shot and sent the ball over the TAFC wall and into the far post net sending the score to 2 – 0.

The TAFC began to try and find a way back into the match. Josh Thompson very nearly brought the TAFC within striking distance as a ball from David Perez found his head, and just kissed the top bar and went out for a goal kick. Gary Foubister was in the NEU box with the ball and was able to send a clever back heel to Chris Tschirley who sent the ball into the net catching the NEU keeper flat-footed. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and the North End Derby ended with a score of 2-1 North End United with the win.

The North End Derby was a physical and highly contested match. The TAFC and NEU face off once again on November 1st, 2009. both teams hope that a referee will be found that can keep both sides level headed, and therefore making for a more enjoyable game.

Frustration as TAFC Stumbles Against Onetouchables

The TAFC was frustrated in their attempts at winning against longtime rival Onetouchables.

tafcvonetouchThe TAFC opened the scoring in the match as a quick cross in from Gary Foubister, met with an attacking David Perez, who netted his third goal in two games for the TAFC. Unfortunately not long after the restart the Onetouchables equalized as they found room on the wing to send in a shot, which was slowed by keeper Roy Payne who was unable to keep the shot from scooting free into the path of another Onetouchable who cleaned up the spill.

Moments later the Onetouchables scored their next goal as a loose ball in the box was being challenged for, attacking Onetouchable pulled down TAFC defender Jerry Makare, and in the process of going for the ball kicked him (not too hard) in the head, and then tapped the ball in for a dubious goal.

Not long after that the TAFC was making a run down the right side of the pitch Gary Foubister sent another cross in over the Onetouchables, David Perez put his head on it and sent it towards the far post where Josh Thompson scored the equalizer on his TAFC Debut. THe run of play turned in favor of the TAFC as the midfield began finding a rythm. The TAFC Defense led by John Gaffney, and Jamey Billig tightened down enough to keep the Onetouchables at bay as opportunity after opportunity for TAFC strikers seemed to fall through. At roughly the 30′ minute mark the Onetouchables scored again as one of their strikes came in past a valient attempt at a stop by Roy Payne.

The second half saw much confusion on the part of the TAFC as a quick change of formation from a 3-2-4-1 to a 4-3-3 left to large a gap between the defense and the midfield, which the Onetouchables exploited. The TAFC held the Onetouchables at arms length as run after run into the TAFC box seemed to take place. The TAFC did find space to counter attack, but seemed to be unable to get the ball near enough the mouth of the goal to cause the Onetouchable defense much trouble, though their lack of subs was clearly becoming an issue for them. Several shots by David Perez, Nando, Jason Elstad, and Josh Thompson went just wide of the goal, and gave the TAFC on the sidelines heart attacks. Unfortunately the Onetouchables found room to manuever and one of their strikers pulled the trigger on a shot from well outside the area, Roy Payne wasn’t able to stretch out big enough to get his hands on the shot, and the Onetouchables went up 4-2

Not long after the strike from outside the area the Onetouchables caught a quick break and found themselves one on one with Roy Payne, and were able to slot the ball into the corner of the net. The TAFC attempted to rally after this and pushed forward looking to close the gap, but on a Onetouchable corner kick the ball was headed high, and somehow just floated into the net. This was a pretty unbeliveable goal, as all on the side though it had cleared the top bar, until the ball touched the back of the net.

Near the end of the match David Levine made a run down the right wing, and was able to manuever himself into striking range and put the ball home. Which brought the game to it’s final score of TAFC 3 – 6 Onetouchables.

Bad Tempers, Good Goals in Season Opener

The Timbers Army Football Club lost 5-4 to GPSD newcomers South VN in an emotionally charged match.

The TAFC opened their account for the season with a goal from Sean Moran who received a cross from David Perez. Sean was able to bang the ball into the back of the net as the keeper tried to come off his line. Unfortunately South VN was able to equalize on a defensive misstep that left the goal open for a shot. Keeper Roy Payne had no chance to keep the ball from hitting the back of the net.

Not long after the restart Donald Bramlet, and a South VN player collided as they challenged for a header. The South VN player was knocked to the ground holding his head. Donald was given a yellow card for dissent as the foul was drawn, and he did not agree with the call. South VN used the momentum gained after this to push for another goal to take them ahead of the TAFC.

During the run of play Sean Moran was making a run into the box and was pulled down. While on the ground the South VN player and Sean exchanged some pushes and attempted blows. The ref broke up the scuffle and both the South VN player, and Sean ended up getting red cards taking both teams down to 10 men. After the re-start South VN scored again by deflecting a shot off of TAFC Midfielder Joe Held to take them into the half-time break up 3-1.

The second half brought about a new formation and much tighter play. The TAFC and South VN were much more evenly matched in this half and both teams were exploiting their strengths. South VN was much faster, while TAFC played very physical. South VN was able to break through on a long run that left the TAFC flat-footed and put the scoreline at 4-1. Not long after Jason Elstad sent a cross in from the right wing that found Cian Dalton’s head, and past the keeper making the score 4-2. Not 2 minutes later Cian Dalton took a screamer of a shot from the 30 that the South VN keeper just barely got his hands on to knock over the bar. The momentum of the game was switching to favor TAFC.

David Perez had made several runs into the South VN area, and had twice been able to challenge for the ball against the keeper, but with little success finishing, but at the midpoint of the second half David and the keeper challenged at the 30 and David won the challenge, he was able to get to his feet and slot the ball into the empty net bringing the score to 4-2. With 15 minutes left in the half the TAFC began pushing forward, and Jason Elstad stuck in a corner sent the ball out to Jerry Makare who took a shot at goal, the keeper made the stop, but was unable to hold the ball and David Perez put the loose ball in the net for the equalizer and his second goal of the day.

With five minutes left South VN made a massive push forward, one player was able to push his way through and make a dash on the goal. His step at the end fooled keeper Roy Payne into stepping right, and as Roy stepped he put the ball into the opposite side of the net.

Final Score for this match was South VN 5-4 TAFC
